Oh Craft.

Wow. is it already mid-day Wednesday? What happened?
This weekend's Pile of Craft fair was really one for the books. The vendors were amazing, the new photobooth got some serious use, sales were great, customers were great and you know what - we felt damn proud all day for having organized this beast.
This pride was followed by (apparently) three full days of turbo exhaustion crash... in which I tubed on the gunpowder river with friends, ate ethiopian food and baked & consumed a fruit tart... and not much else.

I'm so constantly blown away by the amount of people willing to support what we do in Baltimore. By "we" I mean both Red Prairie Press - selling tshirts, and Charm City Craft Mafia - organizing these fairs and expecting people to come. There's always this tiny (ok, huge) bit of anxiety that hits me the week before the show "What if no one comes this time. what if they're sick of these things?" Which is exploded with happiness when the first parade of customers comes marching into the church.

Thank you all for coming out, and making Baltimore shows the best ones we do. On Monday morning, I was sitting outside the church, waiting for the table rental truck to come haul away our rented tables, and I watched a woman walk by across the street wearing what I could tell was a brand new tshirt.... and then I saw that I had made it. There is nothing more affirming than that small moment. No matter how many times it happens.

Summer? Oh yeah... SUMMER!

Sometimes amidst all the chaos that is June-August, I forget to stop & enjoy the summer. Usually it's planning, planning, printing, selling, planning, working, going, going... And suddenly, before you know it, it's September again. 10 years ago, I looked forward to summer because there was NO work and NO keeping up appearances.
Now I look forward to summer because it's when I GET to see people. Come out of the studio a bit.
Found time last night to make some tasty open-faced sandwiches with Phil & our friend Mattan. The boys made some mint juleps by putting ice in a dishtowel and hammering it to pieces with a hammer. We grilled eggplant, marinated spinach, made olive relish & some tasty red cabbage slaw, and sat outside pretending the mosquitos weren't biting our legs to bits.
Now, back to work! There's a CRAFT FAIR this weekend!

PILE OF CRAFT 2010-SATURDAY

I'm getting BEYOND stoked for this years Pile of Craft.
We're getting some big help promoting from local papers (Baltimore City Paper, Washington City Paper, Baltimore Sun...) Blog mentions, radio mentions, radio ADS, print ads... I'm looking forward to seeing everyone!

At the last minute, we decided to add on a special treat this year - a FREE, that's right... FREE Photobooth!!!!!
I met the folks of Magnolia Photo Booth Co. at Renegade in Brooklyn a couple weeks ago and couldn't resist trying to talk them into coming out for the Pile. Luckily, it wasn't hard. One of them was going to be nearby in Baltimore anyway, and they hopped on board.
Magnolia's photobooths come equipped with helpful attendant as well as a basket o props to make your photobooth experience all the better. We can't WAIT to see all the photos folks take this weekend!

GollyBard

Yowza. It's blustering outside. We got up at 6:30 (okay, and by "got up" i mean "briefly woke up, and quickly passed back out") and somehow didn't manage to get out the door to go running until 9:40. What gives? Now it's 12:10, and I'm just starting my day. Oh dear. This is not good! I am usually a very regimented worker! Back to painting I go...
But first, I wanted to show you some work from another painter I just found- GollyBard on Etsy - Holly is a painter in Upperville, VA and was the featured Etsy seller today. You can read the interview here. I love her painting style, and I'm smitten with the patterns she finds in natural objects and we all know I love a nice crisp white background. Lovely, and just enough to get me cracking. Having spent the last few weeks making up my own patterns for the new series, (which I'm still not showing you yet but I'll tell you - involves lots of pattern)........... well..... looking at this work, I'm inspired.
So there.
You can purchase any one of Holly's paintings for me and ship it here to my house, by clicking on this link.
Pile Of Craft is in 4 days. I'm nearly packed and almost can't STAND the excitement. We've just confirmed Magnolia Photo Booth Co. will be at the show. Let's get this straight: A FREE PHOTO BOOTH! With PROPS. Amazing. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll (hopefully) Shop till you (hopefully don't) drop.

Weekend Recap

Great weekend in Baltimore, as they tend to be. No craft fair for a change, but we had the Baltimore Etsy Craft Meetup & Picnic on Friday night which was a delicious blast of craft projects, kids, cupcakes and tasty food. It ended at 9 and Phil and I managed to make it to Toy Story 3 just in time (for the record, I LOVED it, Pixar is gold, and yes, that IS our ideal Friday night).
Saturday I painted the upstairs back porch (avocado green) while Phil ran 9 miles for marathon training. Later, a friend came into town, so we ate at Golden West, and went bowling at Patterson Bowl. Sunday we shopped in Hampden at Atomic Books, and then up to the county for a swim and a hike, followed by ice cream back in Charles Village, and a extra special 1 year birthday edition of Sometimes Dining. If I were to tell someone how to spend their weekend in Baltimore, I'd describe it just like this.

I don't care if Monday's Blue...

Is it already Thursday? Almost Friday? What!?
I'm happy to say that I've been so motivated this week that I didn't notice it go by. It's been a while.
I've started up a schedule of waking up, getting an iced coffee with Phil, taking a photo reference, making a new painting for the series I'm working on, eating dinner, checking emails, going for a run(somehow, I went almost 5 miles yesterday meaning to go 2. I blame The Cure), Watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns and going to sleep. A new painting every day this week (ok, plus a break for a delicious meal at Woodberry Kitchen last night, thanks to my pal Angie).

I'm completely smitten with life as we know it. I go to bed every night already excited for the next day, like it's summer camp. Like every day is Friday. Phil is working in his studio on hand drawn animations and since my office is just down the hall, we can shout to each other and have sing-a-longs without getting in each other's way. I'm working hard, but it's not on tshirts for once and (though I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job) the break is a small relief. Pile of Craft is next week, and I'm ready to go! In the meantime, it's been a year since I felt like making paintings, and I'm going to embrace it while it lasts.

Am I going to show you what I've been working on though? Nope! It's going to be a surprise (though, I doubt if I'll be able to keep it until I'm really done). But I promise it'll be a fun one.

Hope to see you at the Baltimore Etsy Craft Meetup tomorrow evening in Roosevelt Park at 6pm, and if not then, I REALLY hope to see you next Saturday for Pile of Craft. Either all these events are inspiring me to use my time wisely... or Carma's Cafe is putting something in their iced coffee. I'm okay with both, if this keeps up.

in the words of my favorite band to run with "It's [almost] Friday, I'm in love."

Weekend Recap

Oh Snaz. it's summer. It's at least 705F degrees here in Charm City right now. Laundry is being baked to perfection hanging out on the line, there are fans blasting at Phil and I - two each (the plug-in kind, not the admiring kind), we're working hard on our respective projects in our respective studios sipping blueberry, banana, yogurt & cold coffee smoothies (don't knock it till you've tried it) refusing to admit to ourselves that we should probably carry the window AC units up from the basement and we'd collectively stink a lot less. I'm enjoying having another human in the house working during the day (note to self: teachers get OFF all summer! Phil is having FUN!)
Had a great weekend despite the heat. Ultimate Happiness craft fair was a blast, I got to roast marshmallows two nights in a row, visited honfest briefly, and got the very rare treat of seeing my pals Walker & Jay play some old timey music last night at the Windup Space. Outstanding, as always. And I even managed to stay awake and out past midnight without turning into a sweaty little pumpkin.
This week I'm kicking myself in the butt and getting to work on a very exciting project to be finished in September. More on this later. But maybe you can start your guessing from these reference photos I took this morning, high fiving myself. (if you know - don't give it away!)
HINT: it's not a self help book. Though if I wrote one, this would be the cover. And it would likely be the most helpful part. I can't help you if you can't help yourself, Champ.

Go Get em.

Ultimate Happiness THIS WEEKEND IN BMORE!

This weekend I'm taking a break from the big shows to do a smaller more intimate craft fair right here in Baltimore!
The Ultimate Happiness is this Saturday, during (and a conveniently short walk from) Honfest!
More of a designer's showcase than an all out festival (you can get your fix for that just 5 blocks away on 36th st. all weekend), It features just 9 vendors, live music, papercut art demonstrations and alternative food snacks. Yum!
An absolutely ideal event celebrating the presence of high-end//handmade + amazing music. daytime solo + quieter ambient sounds will serenade you as you shop +peruse the 9 vendors' fashion, jewelry, print- + artwork; meanwhile enjoying the spoils of a cash bar. nighttime jams will complete the daylong extravaganza.

ULTIMATE HAPPINESS
1pm-11pm (crafts until 6pm only)
Diversiform
3138 Chesnut Ave
Baltimore, MD 2121

schedule >>
1-6pm :: daytime CRAFT SHOW + FREE ART DEMOS + ambient musical performances
7pm-late pm :: nighttime CONCERT series (featuring Caleb Stine, among others)

For a list of vendors, you can look at (heck, RSVP to even) the Facebook invite right HERE.

The Beast Pageant

Want to help out with a GREAT independent project?
Got $5? You can!

For the last few years, two of my best college friends (Albert Birney & Jon Moses) have been working on a film called The Beast Pageant out of a small studio in Rochester, NY. They spend every free moment, dollar, and ounce of creativity & energy on the film. Because it's been such a huge undertaking, with no real funding to pay for help or actors, many of us have become involved voluntarily in one way or another. Phil has helped with shooting, lighting, construction & sound recording (the film is a musical with all original music), I have mostly been moral support, but can be seen as an extra in a few places, and unseen as moving scenery in other parts. I am in constant awe at the ability of my friends to maintain such inspiration on a project that has taken years to complete without losing focus or burning out. In fact, they seem to do the opposite, and gain momentum with every new day, and new obstacle.
The film is about a man named Abraham living in a tiny confined apartment, working a morally questionable and monotonous job. His sole companionship being a giant controlling big-brother-esque machine. Abraham slogs through daily life miserable but unquestioning, until a tiny singing cowboy bursts from his body and leads him into the wild. The film is full of fantastical characters, amazing costumes & puppetry, great music and inspiring life lessons. It was shot on 16mm with a Bolex camera rescued from a dumpster, with literally no budget.

Because I feel so invested in the film, and I'm so inspired when people work so hard at something they want so badly,
I've just donated $100.
But you can get involved with a donation as little as $1!
On the Beast Pageant Kickstarter page, you can watch the trailer and then choose to donate anything from $1 up to $8,000. There are prizes & thank you gifts for each pledge level, including a poster-hand printed right here at Red Prairie Press-(included in the packages for pledges $100 or more).

I hope you'll join us in helping to finish this film, and getting it promoted. It's truly going to be magical, and I can't wait for you (and me) to see the finished product - which should be finished sometime in August 2010!

Renegade Recap

What to say about this weekend? Well, first off, THANK YOU to all who braved the winds and came out to shop on Saturday and Sunday at Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn. It was wonderful as always to see your shining faces, and meet so many wonderful and interested, craft-lovin folks. The fair was organized fantastically, vendors were top notch, the food delicious & the marching band marched victoriously.
Phil and I were stationed in a spot that seemed to be a particularly active wind tunnel on the edge of the park and spent much of this weekend hanging on to our tent with both arms and lifting up into the air, despite having tied our tent to a nearby tree, and strapped 100lb of sand on each of the four legs. There were tipped mannequins, shirt tornadoes (one of which crashed some poor family's barbeque some 30 yards away and bless their hearts they all came running with bundles of shirts & hangers in their arms and helped us re-hang), dust blasts and a rainy finale. Mid-day Sunday, we took the top off our tent, which both lessened the liftoffs & encouraged the T-storms (har har)... but I enjoyed being out in the sun for a few hours when I wasn't eating dirt or (as one shopper noted) "being structural."
We packed up 2 hours early sunday when the wall exploded and shirts rained into nearby booths just as it started to rain. Somehow we were already laughing about it when we shoved the last bag of hangers in the car, and since the rain cleared, we decided to do a first: Shop together at an indie craft fair. We had so much fun. We got our free photo taken in a photo booth, and bought (among other things) a shirt that says "DON'T GIVE UP" from Print Liberation.
In conclusion, I truly have no idea what I would do without Phil. He is the captain of all that is awesome, all that is stable in the midst of chaos. Helpful and strong and full of good solutions and has energy when I think there's none left in either of us. As someone who takes their independence quite seriously, I must fully admit that I can't fathom laughing about (let alone, surviving) times like these without him by my side, reminding me (among other thins): DON'T GIVE UP.

Indie Icing

Thanks to Christen of Indie Icing for a sweet writeup on that blog today all about Red Prairie Press!
Always nice to start the morning with some unexpected positivity. I've had my granola at Carma's Cafe, leafed through city paper, obtained two high fives from two friends I passed on my walk home, and now have an iced coffee in hand and feel certain that I will be able to OWN today's to-do list. Too bad it's already 11am, and I'm just barely ready to work. How'd that happen? Ahh well, back to owning...

MEN'S TEE LIQUIDATION SALE! $12/each!

RPP Men's Liquidation Sale

We've done it.
After much debate, lots of thought, and some elementary school level calculations, we've committed to discontinuing our gentlemen's line here at Red Prairie Press.
Guys... it's not you...it's....well... no, yeah, it's you.

Despite my Dad, husband and brother-in-law (and handful of male friends) being supportive of the line, our men's tee sales have been incredibly slow & low. I realized we ought to focus on what DOES work, and what people DO actually buy, rather than what we wish people wanted to buy. Despite my childhood motives to be one of the boyz, and my inability to dress like a woman even in a hot pink tutu... I think I have somehow managed to relate more to the ladies with my designs. Oh, and babies. Babies LOVE red prairie press!

The good news for YOU, my small collection of gentlemen (and unisex tee wearing gal) friends, is that all men's tees are just $12 each until they are gone! Since we have a lot of stock, this will take a while, but get em before your size runs out. We are especially low in the medium department, FYI.

Now, if you don't mind, I think I'll go burp, tell a fart joke, use power tools and practice my folk guitar songs so I can keep up with the boys in my life. If you gents want more when these are gone, you'll just have to start wearing racerback tanks and try to keep up with the girls.
The times they are a-changing.

MEN'S SALE HERE.
