Hello, Craft!

Did you hear about Hello Craft yet? Coming to you from some of the masterminds of Crafty Bastards and the Washington City Paper, Hello Craft is "a new group dedicated to the advancement of independent crafters and the handmade movement, as well as empowering small business owners and educating the public to the benefits of buying handmade and teaching the joys of making.

Hello Craft aims to bring together crafters and makers to learn and grow as a community. In 2009, Hello Craft will convene all interested in advocating for and advancing the handmade community at a summit that will take place in Washington D.C."
On top of this game plan, they've started a pretty cool blog & crafty podcast, a sharp looking website, and a boost in excitement, once again, for the DC and surrounding craft community. Charm City Craft Mafia is thrilled to announce that members of Hello Craft will be at Holiday Heap craft fair on November 15th doing video interviews of interested shoppers about their purchases and indie experience! Don't miss it!

Art Opening at School 33 SATURDAY!

Phil is in a great new show at School 33 opening on Saturday night, called "Into The Light/Into The Dark. It's 4 artists affiliated with UMBC.

INTO THE LIGHT/INTO THE DARK
Saturday, Nov. 1st
6-9pm at School 33 Art Center

Artists:
Bonnie Crawford
Phil Davis
John Sturgeon
Christian Valiente
Curater:
Tim Nohe
--------
Into the Light/Into the Dark features three video makers and an installation artist, each works with light modulated through analog systems via “low” or now “lapsed” technologies. The drive behind the exhibition is the impending transition of broadcast television from analog to digital transmission in February 2009. The exhibited artists are multigenerational, with the most senior emerging from the advent of video as an art form in the 1970s and continuing to the young post-mortem investigators reanimating analog video and electronic circuits today.

Actually Delicious Cream Puffs

(logo from puffsandpastries.com; photo from 600Block on flickr)
While we're on the subject of food, and small business (I'm always on the subject of both), have you been to Puff's & Pastries of Hampden yet? It's a pastry shop on 36th street that's WAY too close to our house, that opened about 7 weeks ago. This weekend Phil and I ventured in for the first time on a tip from Angie & Scott that there was deliciousness to be had.
Wow. There sure was. We bought a chocolate cream puff to share, and when we realized we had no cash and had to charge it, we had to force ourselves to purchase some sort of pyramid shaped holy chocolate mountain as well. oh darn, right?
The bakery is owned and run by pastry chef Anisha Jagtap and, according to the website, has a strict "butter only" policy (which is just fine by me, but the statement itself made me chuckle). They also offer parisian sandwiches at lunchtime, and fancy hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows. Yeah. For real. And unlike other dessert shops in Hampden, it's clear what's being sold (goodness), how to get it (go to counter, view variety of goodness, choose, pay, receive), and how much you want it (a lot). The shop owner was there working hard, and as sweet as her pastries, and we were ready to go back again before we'd even walked out the door.
A pleasant and easy place to go get sweets. What brilliant business scheme.
PS- in case you're still wondering, our purchases were BOTH delicious.

Mini Pot Pie

It's freezing and rainy outside and that always motivates me to work harder for some reason... maybe because I know I wouldn't be outside having fun otherwise? Or maybe because the heat setter is so warm on the press, and it's cozy down in the studio.
Cold weather reminded me though, that it's warm foods season, and finally, phil will agree to making hot soup again (I am perpetually cold and ALWAYS ready for stew, but he is perpetually hot, and waits until december to put on a sweater). One of our favorite warm cozy foods to make is vegetarian pot pie, and the other day after making Phil and apple pie for his birthday, I had leftover dough and decided to use up some veggies in our fridge and make mini individual pot pies! I swear, getting your very own individual ANYTHING is double as exciting. I used little white ramekins, and baked them at the same time as the apple pie (I think about 400 degrees, for 20-30 minutes. I just kept checking them until the tops looked done.
I was scolded for not putting a recipe for the last food post I did, so here is what I can remember doing:

-1 potato
-1 carrot
-1 onion
-1 turnip
-1 stalk of celery
-1/3 can of chickpeas (I often use Quorn brand "naked cutlets" for pot pie as well, but these were GREAT too)
-about 3 cups vegetable stock (I boil water and add something called "better than boullion" which is better because it has no msg) even better: making your own stock)
-fresh sage, dry thyme, rosemary, tarragon, & ground black pepper.
-2 tbs olive oil or butter
-leftover pie crust dough

Boil the water/stock in a medium saucepan. While it's boiling, saute the other veggies (including chickpeas) in a big frypan with the herbs. I usually cook the potatoes and starchier veggies first so they soften, but it's not that important. When they start to soften, and the stock is boiling, add the stock to the veggies in small amounts (1/2 cup at a time). You may not need all of the stock - you want the veggies to be wet, with a little bit of thickened broth at the bottom, but not a ton. Think really thick stew. When the potatoes and carrots start to get soft, turn off the heat. Use your leftover pie crust to line the insides of two 5" ramekins, and roll out two discs of dough to cover the tops. Fill these mini pieshells right to the top with the veggie mix and cover with the dough tops. poke a couple air holes, cover with tinfoil (otherwise, the tops will burn before the pies are cooked all the way through), and bake at about 400 degrees (F) for about 20minutes. (or until they look done).

I happened to use those things on the list because they were what I had in the kitchen. Other veggies we use a lot: Frozen peas, green stringbeans, parsnips (careful, they're potent), sweet potatoes, squash... you get the idea.
Let me know if you do things other than eat potatoes and wear sweatpants to endure the cold weather.

Ost-some

(photo from www.junglephotos.com)
I'm in the middle of some animal research for a new project I'm working on... and I have to stop and report back.
Have you ever taken a good long look at an ostrich? They look like dinosaurs in crappy halloween costumes or maybe people in dinosaur costumes... or... ducks in giraffe costumes... I mean... they just don't seem like a real animal. Seriously. I can't stop looking up pictures of them. Creepy ballerinas.

Pastabilities

This past weekend was special because we had some free time, which lead to a few good people coming over, and helping with the production of two of my favorite foods. Linguini and Ravioli. I got up early and made pesto with the basil in our backyard, then went to the farmer's market for some essentials (fresh sage, garlic, eggs). The Ravioli filling was a savory garlic & sage butternut squash goulash, made with a squash "imported" (by us) from the southern NH garden of my in-laws.
It's been a long time since I've had so much fun, and spent so much time on a meal. Phil made the butter walnut sauce to go on the ravioli, Store Phil and I took care of the ravioli themselves (see our awesome long strips waiting for the official ravioli chopper: A juice glass). Linguini hung over every chair in the kitchen waiting to be boiled, cheese was consumed in mass quantities during the (kinda long) wait, and by the time we were done, there were aproximately 300 pounds of pasta for each of us, and we had all had too much wine. Amazing. Good food with good people. Try it sometime. (Thanks Jen for the photos)

David Sedaris on Undecided Voters

"I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?
To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked."

The Great Halloween Lantern Parade

Are you going to the Great Annual Halloween Lantern Parade in Patterson Park this weekend? Well, you should!
Go early, carpool, and dress for arctic weather. It's a beautiful event and you can still sign up to volunteer to be IN the parade by emailing annie@nanaprojects.com. Hold a puppet or large lantern and feel fancy, why don't you! Do you walk on stilts? They need you to do that too! Info below:

Halloween Dance Party

I have to admit... It's not often that poster's in Baltimore catch my eye, but I nearly tipped off my bike en route to the farmer's market last week because I was gawking at this one (and also because I'm bad at riding my bike). Looks like a Kevin Sherry concoction? Nice work.

One Year Already?

What you don't know can't hurt you right? Well but also, what you don't know is also fun to hear, so guess what!
Here's a secret that isn't actually secret. Although we had our big sweaty dance party of a wedding in July of this year, we actually tied the knot legally in October of LAST year. To be precise, on October 22 of last year. At the Circuit Court downtown Baltimore. With only our pal Bonnie at our side.
YOU: "hey wait...October 22...that's TODAY of this year!!!!"
To celebrate this sneaky non-secret (our mouths are way too big for the news to stay silent. I'm not sure there was a sole at the wedding that didn't know we were already married) and because we were way too proud of ourselves, we got absolutely nothing accomplished today, and went out to eat at Miss Shirley's and wandered around downtown aimlessly together for an hour before going back to work.
In my true blogger fashion, I find it only relevant to find something to promote...So, I'll remind you of the super awesome necklaces that our dear friend Annie made for our July wedding and now sells online. These necklaces (a collaboration between imogene and red prairie press) and everything else in the Imogene Shop are currently on sale with the below coupon code for all of Annie's blog readers! So, to show all of our friend's in Baltimore how much you love that Phil and I have been married for a year, just... you know... go buy one!

Someday I'll actually put up a post with photos from our wedding and the things I made too. For now, know that today is a mighty happy day here on the red prairie. Here's to true love, eh?

We're busy so...

Belated Maine Recap

So, Phil's family is wonderful and has decided that they'll have Thanksgiving early every year so that everyone can go to their respective "other sides." for real thanksgiving. The other inlaws, if you will. This year, their faux thanksgiving happened to fall on Canadian Thanksgiving without anyone knowing until the last minute, and then, of course, we all pretended we'd known the whole time. I believe it has sparked a new tradition in the Davis family, and a fitting one. Grammy Davis was born in Nova Scotia. Plus, Maine is awfully close to Canada. Plus, the Canadians are a fine people, and we should be thankful they are such pleasant neighbors! Anyway, here are some photos from our wonderful trip to New England... which was all too brief, but just enough time to fill our nostrils with autumn air, check out the leaves and pumpkins, eat enough apples to last all winter, and spend some quality time on a beautiful farm on a pleasant front porch taking photos of each other.
Sunset over Maine, Canadian Thanksgiving Day:

Who'd have thought I'd miss a certain type of tree? Although I don't remember acknowledging them while I lived there, White birch now endlessly remind me of home.

Phil on the trail to an overlook of Mt. Katadin, which is the northernmost point of the Appalacian trail.

A beautiful day on a beautiful porch. So much food, coffee and fresh air:

Just like white birch, while plentiful in New England, you don't see many of these in Baltimore:

And what trip to New England is complete without obsessing over our adorable niece?

Habitat

Have you ever been to the galleries at Goucher College? Hey! Why not now!
I'm in a group show at Goucher in a few weeks entitled "Habitat" and my little gouache paintings are in for some fine fine company. Take a gander at the show postcard to see all of the participating artists!

I'll post this again when it's nearer to the opening, but I got excited to see everyone's work look so great together!
This promises to be a good one. AT LEAST worth the drive to Towson, which (unless you fell in a hole and somehow missed the ridiculous hummer parade and massive banner smothering Towson Town Center) you probably know to be the homeland of Michael Phelps.

Kyle made voting tshirts

I like when people other than me come over and use the press. It makes the basement more awesome.
The other day, Kyle printed these awesome PLEASE VOTE (and the more pleading: PLEASE F*CKING VOTE shirts too). Did you get yours yet? GET IT HERE.
Speaking of voting...
Are you even registered to vote yet?
Registration ends like... NOW.
Be sure you are registered, dears.
America needs you this time.

American needs you, and you need this shirt.

Okay, Also

Oh- also- I had to post this because I'm both flattered and weirded out (mostly flattered).
The maker - Lisa - wrote an email to me asking if it was okay to post her "felt translation" of my painting "The Secret" on her flickr page. The original painting (top) was recently used for The new Spinto Band album "Moonwink" (go get it!) and that's where she found it. The translation is actually of the album cover. . I mostly just didn't know what a felt translation was, so of course I said HECK YEAH!

Weird and totally awesome to see your own art made in a different way!

Words of Wisdom from Office

Sorry for the low post rate... things are busier than ever here in Baltimore and I've barely had time to breath. Poor Phil has had to help out with printing and errands and screen burning, and we all but missed his birthday and had to take a rain check. Terrible.
I know when my arms are sore, it's been a productive day, and if I could feel them right now, I think they would be really really sore. (Right now they are pleasantly numb). When there's time, I'll post some photos of our weekend sprint to upstate Maine and back. For now, I'll leave you with a quote.
D*S recently featured a poster from Office and I went to the site and looked at the about section and the first thing written there was "We believe mediocrity is our nemesis"

I didn't know it, but I think we do too. Also: Free Time.

temporarily out of service

After what has got to have been the unofficial record for the worst day of screenprinting in art history, I was heading to bed defeated and saw this note from my friend Owen and laughed out loud.
Off to New England for the weekend to celebrate Canadian thanksgiving with the Davis family. I can taste the apples and cold air already, and look forward to avoiding the word "stress" for a few days, as there's literally nothing one can do about anything work related when stressing from rural Maine. See you monday.

New Painting, Old Peppers

So, say your jalapeno peppers - which back in the dog days of summer were most certainly a pleasant shade of jalapeno green - suddenly started lookin' like this while you were neglecting the garden. "Is this their way of costuming up for halloween?" you might ask. "Are they trying to turn christmas colors so they can come to HOLIDAY HEAP 2008?" Here's MY question: Would you still eat them ?(the ones that are not mushy like bean cakes, I mean) hmmm. While you ponder that thought, here's a look at the new painting I finished this weekend:

tentatively called "The Uniform" but I'm not sure it does it justice... thoughts? concerns? pepper advice? better title? Just want to wish my true love a HAPPY 27th BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!?

GET YOURS NOW DO IT

Remember how I told you my friend Vanessa had started her own business? Pidge Pidge, for those of you who forgot, or never read that post.
Well, we finally snapped a photo of the magical quilted illustration she made us for our wedding gift, and wanted to share it with you. That's right. We OWN the piece pictured above. Uh huh. Yeah. And I do believe that's Me, as a freaky grey cat, marrying Mr. SammyPhil. (She even stole a swatch of the fabric I used for Phil's tie and my sash, and used it for those things in the picture).

I'll wait while you recover from fainting out of raging jealousy.

Okay? Are you awake again? Okay, GO TO PIDGEPIDGE.ETSY.COM, commission a portrait of your fattest most slovenly & doofy looking pet for a loved one or yourself, just in time for whatever gift-giving holiday you celebrate. Then, report back and show us a photo. I'm a little bit obsessed.

Have you seen my socks? (or... "I don't know how to shop")

Even though I post about things I like and want all the time... I mostly come across them by accident, or from someone else telling me about them. I rarely want or look for something specific, and when I do, it's generally an office supply, or screenprinting product.
This September when I was in Chicago though, I saw a girl with cool socks, and have been thinking about them ever since. If you know me, you know it's not really a secret that I really dig jacked up knee socks, and that I like drawing them and wearing them.. but this girl had particularly cool socks, and I can't seem to find them. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?
They were sorta like those old tights you had to wear to sunday school... maybe cotton, maybe wool...but a little bit thicker, and sort of crocheted looking...with little eyelet holes? she was wearing them with brown saddle shoe kinda shoes, i think, and an ankle length skirt, and I thought it was the most terrific outfit I'd ever seen.
Can someone clue me in as to where I might find some of those socks so I can begin my ascent into Chicago Hipster coolness?
Here are the closest things I could find. Anthropologie has some tights that come close... but I'm not so much into tights as I have a habit of ripping them while putting them on. DutchKnitting blogged about a pair she made...which are awesomely awesome (and I'd LOVE a pair for christmas from any person in my family that knits socks on a regular basis...hint hint...) but thicker than what I was thinking. There's a photo (above) of a girl on vintage look book that comes close too...but I don't know where she got them, and she looks a little more fetishy than my purposes.

Artists Review Artists Project!

FOR ARTISTS: Here's a cool new project over at "Thinking About Art" blog, which I found through the Bmore Art blog this morning.
Artists go on the site and submit ONE jpeg image of their work, and in turn, agree to review another artist's one image. As a reviewer, you will see only the work and the materials and title, not the other artist's name. You write any sort of response to the work (positive, negative, constructive or not...) and it gets published on the site. You then find out who your artist was, and they have a chance to respond, and the discussion can continue. Your one image will be reviewed in the same way.
The blogger, and project runner, J.T. Kirkland, said something I thought was pretty nice to hear, about how he didn't know what an art review WAS anymore. He thought it would be fresh and more relevant to have current working artists give their 2-cents about artwork. Nice idea - I can't wait to see the responses!

(pictured above: "Amerika" by participating TJ Norris. Thought it'd be appropriate for today's debate :)
