Due to various kinds of u-lock failure I have had to "steal" my own bike or the bikes of friends and relatives on various occasions. Method: dremmel tool run off an inverter from a car battery. This being Portland, rather than New York City, we've always encountered some kind folks who expressed sympathy for our plight, but no one who ever accused us of committing a crime or who was less than totally credulous of our "jammed lock" explanation. If I saw someone cutting a bike lock, would I say something? Yeah, probably. Would I believe them if they said it was their bike? Yeah, I probably would.

me too- that was my only problem with this video... if someone has the audacity to do it in broad daylight, i'd probably assume they were just trying to get their own bike back. (although Angie's bike was stolen in broad daylight, AT a street festival. someone ripped up the entire sign she'd locked her bike to!)

glad portland also seems more honest than baltimore...though... that's a generalization to say the least.
