Baltimore Jewelry Center - Tonight at D Center

Opening tonight - May 30th - at the D center Baltimore, "Points of Departure" celebrates the 22 year history of the MICA Jewelry Center. This exhibition marks a crucial transition as the MICA program closes and the Baltimore Jewelry Center takes its place as a community facility no longer a part of Baltimore's biggest and most expensive Arts institution.
"Points of Departure" looks to the future of the Baltimore Jewelry Center as part of Station North Arts District, and features contemporary jewelry and sculpture from the faculty, alumni, and students of the MICA program, as well work from national artists who taught as visiting artists. The exhibition will be on view from May 30th until June 20th. The opening reception will take place from 6 – 9pm May 30th as part of the Station North Final Friday events. There will be a closing reception on June 20 from 6-9pm. You can learn more about classes and studio rental offered by the Baltimore Jewelry Center at the exhibition. For gallery hours and more information, please call 410.235.5871.

I'm so thrilled about the potential of community arts facilities like this one (or the already successful 2 year old Baltimore Print Studios, with whom I often collaborate), and am inspired by the staff of the Jewelry center who saw a dying program at the University and took it into their hands to save the good parts and make a historic and awesome craft more accessible to more people. Bravo!
