Have you seen my socks? (or... "I don't know how to shop")

Even though I post about things I like and want all the time... I mostly come across them by accident, or from someone else telling me about them. I rarely want or look for something specific, and when I do, it's generally an office supply, or screenprinting product.
This September when I was in Chicago though, I saw a girl with cool socks, and have been thinking about them ever since. If you know me, you know it's not really a secret that I really dig jacked up knee socks, and that I like drawing them and wearing them.. but this girl had particularly cool socks, and I can't seem to find them. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?
They were sorta like those old tights you had to wear to sunday school... maybe cotton, maybe wool...but a little bit thicker, and sort of crocheted looking...with little eyelet holes? she was wearing them with brown saddle shoe kinda shoes, i think, and an ankle length skirt, and I thought it was the most terrific outfit I'd ever seen.
Can someone clue me in as to where I might find some of those socks so I can begin my ascent into Chicago Hipster coolness?
Here are the closest things I could find. Anthropologie has some tights that come close... but I'm not so much into tights as I have a habit of ripping them while putting them on. DutchKnitting blogged about a pair she made...which are awesomely awesome (and I'd LOVE a pair for christmas from any person in my family that knits socks on a regular basis...hint hint...) but thicker than what I was thinking. There's a photo (above) of a girl on vintage look book that comes close too...but I don't know where she got them, and she looks a little more fetishy than my purposes.

I will knit you some socks just as soon as I get out of grad school. Until then if you want to make your own my mother-in-law can teach you with her crazy DVD! See http://www.societysocks.com/

Is white the color of choice? I know someone who knits.

white... or slightly off-white creme, perhaps?

I just got some cream wool knee highs in that sort of pattern at H&M- two for $9! They had black as well. I luuurve knee highs, and bought pairs in every color, now if I ever left my house to wear them out....
